Barriers 1.0. 2021

Barriers 1.0 is a performance which challenges the traditions of mannerisms and expectations of the ‘White Cube’ gallery space. The performer represents a post which holds the red velvet rope, commonly found in art galleries and museums, it is used to protect the artwork it surrounds and also separates the artwork from the spectators.

This performance allows the audience to interact with the artwork without any ‘barrier’ or restrictions. It also mocks the idea of the traditional gallery space protecting its work from the spectator. The performer, who is the artwork, is actually exposed to the public and has the freedom to transmit a sense of humour and ridiculous to the gallery attendees. There is a sense of irony when viewing this performance, as there is no actual art piece in the centre of the roped off area. The humour and confusion over this missing element allows the spectator to question what the artwork is and also how the high art status can be flipped by placing the artwork (the performer) within the barrier between the artwork and the audience. The performer is essential placed in limbo between being a piece of art and being a spectator, which allows it to function as both making it accessible to the audience and transmittable between it and them. But also the performer is objectified as a piece of artwork, which is sculptural in form, but also has the element of the mundane given artistic status with the use of the bucket.
